GENERAL DESCIPTION:
Operates two-way radio system in the receipt and transmission of police, fire, and ambulance calls; dispatches equipment as necessary; does related work as required. The dispatcher may also serve as switchboard operator and complaint taker.
Positions in this classification involve routine dispatching work by telephone or radio. Calls are received for police, fire, ambulance, and other emergency equipment whereupon a dispatcher contacts by radio or telephone the unit or units to the dispatched, giving the type and location of the emergency and other pertinent information. The dispatcher also records all information concerning calls and complaints. Supervision is received from the Communications Supervisor. This position is classified as NON-EXEMPT.
ADA MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS OR STANDARDS REQUIRED TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENT: Must be physically able to operate a variety of machines. Must be able to use body to work, move or carry objects or materials. Must be able to exert up to twenty pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to ten pounds force frequently. Physical demand requirements are at levels of those for sedentary work.
DATA CONCEPTION: Requires the ability to compare and or judge the readily observable functional, structural, or compositional characteristics (whether similar to or divergent from obvious standards) of data, people, or things.
INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATIONS: Requires the ability of speaking and/or signaling people to convey or exchange information. Includes giving assignments and/or directions to co-workers or assistants.
LANGUAGE ABILITY: Requires ability to read a variety of informational documentation, directions, instructions and methods and procedures. Requires the ability to write reports and essays with proper format, punctuation, spelling and grammar, using all parts of speech.
INTELLIGENCE: Requires the ability to learn and understand relatively complex principles and techniques; to make independent judgment in absence of supervision; and to acquire knowledge of topics related to primary occupation.
VERBAL ATPITUDE: Requires the ability to record and deliver information, to explain procedures and to follow verbal and written instructions.
NUMERICAL APTITUDE: Requires the ability to utilize the mathematical formulas; add and subtract totals; determine percentages; determine time and weight.
FORM/SPATIAL APTITUDE: Requires the ability to inspect items for proper length, width and shape, visually with office equipment.
MOTOR COORDINATION: Requires the ability to coordinate hands and eyes in using equipment.
MANUAL DEXTERITY: Requires the ability to handle a variety of items, office equipment, control knobs, switches, etc. Must have the ability to use one hand for twisting or turning motion with coordinating other hand with different activities. Must have minimal levels or eye/hand/foot coordination.
COLOR DISCRIMINATION: May require the ability to differentiate colors and shades of color.
INTERPERSONAL TEMPERAMENT: Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under minimal stress with confronted with an emergency.
PHYSICAL COMMUNICATION: Requires the ability to talk and/or hear: (talking-expressing or exchanging by means of spoken word). (Hearing – perceiving nature of sounds by ear).

Receives calls by telephone or radio for police, fire, ambulance and other emergency equipment.
Determines by inquiry the exact location of the place or point of emergency and dispatches the proper unit or units; transmits such messages as may be necessary in conducting operations at point of emergency.
Monitors burglar and fire alarm receiving equipment, transmits special information through wired and radio communication systems of the city to various units.
Fills out dispatch accounting forms and other data sheets required.
Marginal Job Functions
Performs related work as required or assigned.
Minimum Training and Experience Required to Perform Essential Job Functions
Some experience and training in office work and/or radio communications and graduation from a senior high school; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
Knowledge of Job
Good knowledge of the geography of the highway and street system in the city; some knowledge of the Federal and State regulations governing transmission by radio. Alertness and skill in detecting the scope and magnitude of an emergency; pleasant personality and good speaking voice. Courtesy and tact in dealing with others; good physical condition.
